Autism is a mental superpower with emotion as its kryptonite.

Autism is perpetual and unrelenting hyperfocus, the state of intense single-minded concentration fixated on one thought pattern at a time to the exclusion of everything else, including one’s own feelings. We who are autistic live in an inner space that is entirely intellectual, free from emotional and social distractions.

Hyperfocus enables a person to amass encyclopedic knowledge in passionately pursued fields of interest. Newton, Darwin, Jefferson, Edison, Tesla, and Einstein were autistic.

Hyperfocus makes us incapable of feeling emotion. We process our emotions intellectually, a process that can take 24 hours, by which time it is too late to have felt anything.

The upside of emotional detachment is that we are totally fearless. In every life-threatening situation we are calm and mentally alert, calculating risks and planning a course of action. The downside is that we become mentally paralyzed when under emotional attack.
